FAQ's

What is gum disease?
Gum Disease is an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth. Gum disease is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. There are two major stages of gum disease: Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Regular dental check ups play an important role in diagnosing gum disease early.

Several symptoms of gum disease are:
  • Frequent Bad breath
  • Red and swollen gums that bleed easily
  • Gums separating from the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Change in your bite
  • Change in the way partials or dentures fit
  • If you have noticed any of these signs or symptoms, you should see your dentist to discuss treatment options.

    What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early. The signs and symptoms are red, swollen and puffy gums that bleed easily. If treatment is not received, gingivitis could lead to periodontitis.

    What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is the serious and advanced stage of gum disease which includes bone loss and is irreversible. The gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth could become seriously damaged and the teeth affected could become loose and fall out.

What are the benefits of dental implants?
The reality is that missing teeth will affect the overall health and aesthetics of the teeth. When a tooth is removed, the bone immediately begins to resorb and the surrounding teeth begin to move. The placement of an implant will prevent that movement as well as continue to stimulate the bone, especially if a tooth has been missing for a period of time. As the bone resorbs there is a loss of muscle attachment and may result in the skin appearing ‘saggy’. In this respect, replacing the tooth into the bone with a dental implant allows the muscle to become stronger and the bone to revitalise. This allows the facial skin to expand looking smoother.
