What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that replaces the root part of a missing tooth before being covered with a crown. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth and an alternative to wearing dentures. Due to the biocompatible of titanium, the dental implant can fuse with the bone and becomes a fixed anchor for the replacement tooth.

How will I know if I need a dental implant?
If you’re missing a tooth or several teeth for whatever reason, you may be eligible for dental implants. Your Smiles Dental clinician will advise you on the best treatment based on your individual needs.

How do dental implants work?
Your Smiles clinician will evaluate your condition and create treatment plan tailored to you. You will be informed of all likely costs before the treatment itself begins so there’ll be no surprises. The dental implant process takes place in two steps.

Step 1:
Your Smiles Dental clinician will insert your implants before placing a protective cover over them. The initial implant can take from 45 minutes – 3 hours and is usually applied under local anaesthetic (conscious sedation is also available). The dental implant fuses with your jawbone over a period of three to six months. The jawbone grows around the screw and holds the implant firmly in place. (A temporary denture may need to be worn during this phase).

Step 2:
A crown is placed over the implant to replace the original natural tooth after the implant has bonded with the jawbone.

What are the advantages of dental implants?
• Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth and can last the lifetime of the owner

• Dental implants can prevent jawbone shrinkage that tooth loss can cause, whereas dentures and bridges cannot

• With bridges, adjacent teeth are usually modified to provide anchors. Dental implants eliminate the need for this

• Higher levels of comfort than traditional dentures
