Smiles Dental Plan
Smiles Dental Plan is a brand new dental subscription product, that helps you spread the cost of routine dental care throughout the year.
It’s a great way to stay on top of your oral health, with the additional peace of mind of paying in bite-sized amounts. What’s more, Smiles Dental Plan is up to 10%* cheaper than having the equivalent check-ups and hygiene appointments and paying at each appointment, and you’ll receive further discounts on a range of additional treatments †, too.
Fresher, healthier smiles and great savings – what’s not to love?
It’s not always easy to put your oral health first, and many people put off important regular dental check-ups due to concerns about the price.
By subscribing to Smiles Dental Plan, you are committing to scheduled dental appointments to maintain good oral health and overall wellbeing. On top of this, you’re spreading the cost into manageable payments for better peace of mind and making saving of up to 10%* on your routine dental care.
With regular monitoring, your dentist will be able to spot concerns like gum disease and tooth decay before they worsen and provide treatment that may help to avoid them altogether. Your check-ups also include screens for mouth cancer. Oral cancers affect over 700 people in Ireland each year, with almost twice as many men than women diagnosed.1

If you’re keen to keep your oral health in shape but have concerns about the cost, Smiles Dental Plan presents a budget-friendly solution.
Every Smiles Dental Plan saves you up to 10%* on the equivalent dentist check-ups and hygiene appointments (when paid at each appointment) and splits the cost into 12 manageable monthly payments.
In addition, you’ll also get a 10% discount on a range of selected dental treatments †.
Your Smiles Dental Plan includes:
• An agreed number of check-up and hygiene appointments to meet your oral healthcare needs
• Up to two routine dental X-rays per year, if clinically required
• Preventative dental advice
• 10% off selected private dental treatments†
• Fillings, inlays and onlays
• Emergency appointments
• Dentures
• Bridges
• Crowns
• Gum disease treatment (non-surgical)
• Hygiene services
• Tooth extractions (non-surgical)
• Additional X-rays required
Discount only applies to the above treatments, all others are excluded†.
If you qualify for Basic Dental Entitlements or the Treatment Benefit Scheme with your PRSI entitlement, these benefits can be used in payment against your Smiles Dental Plan.
Your PRSI entitlement could be used to cover the full cost of one dentist check-up per calendar year and to contribute €42 towards a scale and polish treatment. As such, those who qualify for PRSI and choose to use it with us, will pay an average of €10 less per month for their Smiles Dental Plan.
Most patients will find that two dentist check-ups and two hygiene appointments each year is enough to stay on top of their oral health**.
However, some patients may have additional needs or different preferences. If you’ve suffered from gum disease or have had a dental implant placed, for example, you may benefit from additional hygienist appointments – you can select this option when you subscribe to your plan.
Not sure about the right combination of check-ups and hygiene appointments for you? Your participating Smiles Dental team will be happy to help.
Your Smiles Dental Plan is split into manageable bite-sized monthly payments. These payments are up to 10% cheaper than check-ups and hygiene appointments when paid for by appointment, with the total divided by 12 and rounded to the nearest 50 cent.
While prices will vary from practice to practice, the average monthly cost for a routine Smiles Dental Plan for an existing patient (featuring 2 x check-ups and 2 x hygiene appointments per year) is just €24.50 per month. If you qualify for Basic Dental Entitlements or the Treatment Benefit Scheme, these benefits can be used in payment against your Smiles Dental Plan, reducing the monthly cost further.
Contact your practice to find out the cost of a plan today.
Your 12 monthly payments will be collected via Direct Debit.
When you subscribe to Smiles Dental Plan, you’ll pay a one-off set-up fee of just €10.
We’ll collect this fee around the time of your first monthly payment. Once paid, you won’t be charged anything extra for subscribing and you’ll have full access to all your plan’s additional benefits.

If you have signed up for a PRSI plan, we have included your dental entitlement under the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the purposes of calculating the entitlements of your plan. To the extent that you obtain the benefits of the Treatment Benefit Scheme at another practice, your entitlement under your Plan will be reduced accordingly. The payment of the plan fees will not impact your entitlement to any benefits of the Treatment Benefit Scheme.
Your plan does not cover:
The cost of the patient contribution towards a scale and a polish under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, if you have signed up to a PRSI plan. This must be paid at the time of the hygiene appointment.
Pharmaceutical items, prescription fees (for example referral to another practice for a CT scan or X-ray) or laboratory fees.
Dental appointments, advice of treatment provided by a dental practitioner who is not a Smiles Dental clinician at the practice or who does not offer services under the plan.
The cost of any specialist treatment or advice provided by a specialist dentist if the clinician makes such a referral during an appointment covered under your plan.

The full list of inclusions: additional x-rays (in your dental practice), fillings, inlays/onlays, gum disease treatment (non-surgical), oral hygiene and disease prevention, tooth extractions (non-surgical), dentures, bridges, crowns and emergency appointments.

If you need to change your Smiles Dental practice, please speak to your practice team. They can help you find an alternative Smiles Dental practice offering Smiles Dental Plan. If you’re happy with the price at the new practice, you can transfer your plan.
If you are setting up more than one plan, e.g. one for yourself and one for your partner, you’ll need to use a separate email address for each patient.
Your Smiles Dental Plan agreement is between you and your Smiles Dental practice. While we would expect you to receive your ongoing care from your usual dentist, it may be necessary for another Smiles clinician to care for you from time to time due to extenuating circumstances. If your dentist changes permanently, we will notify you by email.
Please contact your practice, who will be able to cancel your plan for you with 30 days’ written notice. Please remember to cancel your direct debit after your final payment has been taken.
Yes. You can cancel your Smiles Dental Plan for any reason during a 14-day cooling off period after signing up. If you have made a payment within your cooling off period and you change your mind, please let us know straight away. Your first monthly payment will be refunded to you, minus the registration fee you have been charged (providing you have not received any treatment in this time).
After your 14-day cooling off period has finished, there is a minimum 3-month term from the commencement date of plan. After this period, you can cancel at any time by contacting your practice and providing 30 days’ written notice.
We expect every part of your experience with Smiles Dental to reflect our high standards of customer care. If we have not met your expectations, please contact your local Practice Manager in the first instance. If you are not satisfied with the response from your local practice manager, please see our complaints process for further information about how we can help.
The Smiles Dental Plan is suitable for both PRSI and Non PRSI patients, depending on your own individual circumstances and if you have the required PRSI eligibility. Your chosen Smiles Dental practice can check your PRSI eligibility to ensure you are on the right plan.
If you select a PRSI plan, then your Smiles Dental Plan will incorporate your Treatment Benefits, including any funded annual check-ups or subsidised hygiene appointments. If you have signed up for a PRSI plan, we have included your dental entitlement under the Treatment Benefit Scheme for the purposes of calculating the entitlements of your plan. For the avoidance of doubt, the Plan will have no impact on your statutory rights and benefits, including those pursuant to the Treatment Benefit Scheme. By purchasing the Plan, you are not obliged to utilise its benefits under the Treatment Benefit Scheme at a Smiles practice. To the extent that you obtain the benefits of the Treatment Benefit Scheme at another practice, your entitlement under your Plan will be reduced accordingly. The payment of the plan fees will not impact your entitlement to any benefits of the Treatment Benefit Scheme.
Treatment Benefit is a scheme run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) to provide a limited financial contribution towards dental, optical and aural services. The Treatment Benefit Scheme is available to insured workers, the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions.
Under this scheme, as at the time of writing these FAQs (June 2024) the DSP pays the full cost of an oral examination once a calendar year and a payment of €42 towards either a scale and polish. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance – capped at €15 for a scale and polish.
Your Smiles Dental PRSI Plan will be reviewed annually to ensure you remain on the correct plan. If there are any changes to your defined Treatment Benefits (PRSI entitlements) we will notify you in the first instance to allow you to investigate. Your plan/benefits will be placed on hold for a short period of time, and you can choose to move to a non-PRSI plan or continue your existing PRSI plan once your entitlements are reinstated.
