Mouth Cancer Awareness Day 2014
This year Mouth Cancer Awareness Day falls on September 17th. To celebrate and raise awareness of this important day Smiles Dental are offering free mouth cancer examinations to everyone in our clinics nationwide! All you need to do is book your appointment. Our quick and pain-free examination could save your life, so there’s really no excuse to miss out.

What’s it all about?
Every year in Ireland more than 300 cases of mouth cancer are reported. Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is all about education and raising awareness of mouth cancer and the free exams that are on offer. Cancers can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue, lips, throat, sinus and other surrounding areas. Mouth cancer cases are most common in older people, but the number of younger people being diagnosed is on the rise. Another worrying fact is that according to the National Cancer registry in Ireland, only around half of mouth cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. Early detection is crucial in treating and beating all cancers. Your dentist can play an important role in detecting early signs of mouth cancer. We encourage all of our patients to come in for their free mouth cancer examination on September 17th and to let their loved ones and friends know too.

The Mouth Cancer Examination
This is a very quick (usually no more than 10 minutes) and completely painless exam, where your dentist will check your entire mouth area for signs of mouth cancer. There are no injections involved, there is little more required on your behalf other than opening wide and saying ‘Aaaah’.

Some tips for keeping a healthy mouth
– Prevention is better than cure. Visit your dentist regularly, we suggest around once every six months for a routine exam. This is so your dentist can spot any potential problems before they set in

– Early warning signs of mouth cancer include, red or white patches in the mouth. Mouth ulcers that do not heal within around three weeks and any unusual changes in your mouth or neck area

– Eat a healthy diet, full of vitamins A, C and E

– Avoid smoking and/or chewing tobacco
